Archaeological Site of Eleusis The settlement of Eleusis was founded in ca. 2000 B.C. on the slopes of the hill, and during the Mycenaean period it developed into a large fortified settlement, mostly due to its strategic position. During this period the cult of Demeter was introduced, as the worship of a deity connected to nature and the growing of cereals. The continuity of Demeter’s cult is attested until Roman times, by the erection of successive temples on the east side of the hill. In the 8th century B.C. the sanctuary aquired a panhellenic character, and in the time of Solon, the Eleusinian Mysteries were established as one of the most important Athenian festivals. During the tyranny of Peisitratos the sanctuary and the settlement were enclosed with a massive fortification wall reinforced with towers. Splendid buildings were erected during the Classical and Roman periods, but with the spread of Christianity and especially after the invasion of the Ostrogoths, the sanctuary was abandoned. Elefsina is a city of the former Attica Prefecture and headquarters of the Regional Unity of Western Attica, while it is located 20 km from Athens. It has an area of 20 km² and a population of 24,910 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census. In ancient times, Eleusina together with Athens, Olympia, Delphi and Delos was the 5 holy cities of Ancient Greece and the Sacred Road ended. Elefsina emerged as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2021. Elefsina is served by the new Athens – Corinth National Highway, the old Athens – Corinth National Road, which crosses the Elefsina refineries of Hellenic Petroleum, the Piraeus – Patras railway line and Attiki Odos. It borders with Aspropyrgos (east), Mandra (northwest), Loutropyrgos and New Peramos (west). It has a large commercial port, the 2nd in Attica with Piraeus, and a military airport. At Elefsina Beach there is the bus terminus from Athens (A16 from Iera Odos) as well as the lines from Piraeus (845 from Thebes – Athens Avenue and 871 from Sistos Avenue), from Acharnes (878 from Lef.
